10 Essential Items Every First-Time Camper Needs

10 Essential Items Every First-Time Camper Needs

Have you ever found yourself at a family BBQ or around the backyard fire pit listening to your friends or family tell wild tales of their camping adventures, while you awkwardly sip your drink and pretend that the idea of roughing it in the great outdoors doesn’t completely terrify you? Well, you’re not alone! You’ve always enjoyed the idea of camping, but the reality of sleeping in a tent, dealing with bugs, and (gasp!) no Wi-Fi has held you back. But guess what? It’s time to take the plunge and become (or at least act the part) as one of those outdoor enthusiasts who knows their way around a campfire and a camping stove. You got this!

To make your first camping trip as enjoyable (and as stress-free) as possible, here are 10 things every first-time camper needs:

1. A Tent (That Actually Fits You)

You may have borrowed one of your buddy’s tents before, but it’s time for you to own one. Look for one that’s easy to set up and spacious enough for your stuff (and your hopes of avoiding claustrophobia). Check out this popular 4-person tent.

2. Sleeping Bag

Unless you want to wake up either too cold or too hot, you’ll need a solid, breathable and functional sleeping bag. We’re not camping at Mt. Everest base camp so no need to break the bank on a -35 degree Fahrenheit bag. Get something that is flexible for all seasons that will last you many future camp outings! Here’s a warm and cozy sleeping bag that we’d highly recommend.

3. Camping Stove

If you love a good breakfast in the great outdoors (did someone say flapjacks?) you need a reliable camping stove. Simple, reliable, and not requiring you to build a fire from scratch, this stove is a must-have. This trusty machine has been with me for many years and was “cooking” long before the kids started saying it.

4. Cooler (Because life is too short to drink warm beer)

You’re going to need a cooler for those cold drinks and snacks. Don’t let the heat ruin your vibe. Check out this highly-rated cooler that won’t break the bank, unlike all these Yeti yuppies with their overpriced gear.

5. Headlamp or Flashlight (But we’d recommend a headlamp for functionality!)

Nighttime in the woods is dark… like, really dark. Don’t trip over rocks or lose your way to the bathroom because you counted on the moonlight to guide your way! Get yourself a reliable headlamp this one and let there be light!

6. Camp Chair

You’ll be sitting around the fire, relaxing, and enjoying the outdoors. A comfy camp chair is an absolute must. Here’s a top-rated chair that won’t break your back or the bank.

7. First Aid Kit

Let’s be real—things can happen. A scraped knee from hiking, or maybe you just need a Band-Aid for your pride after you tripped over a tree root. It’s ok, we won’t tell. Get a good first aid kit here and let your boo-boo thank you!

8. Portable Phone Charger

Even if you plan to disconnect, a portable charger is handy. You don’t want to be lost in the wilderness without a way to contact someone if needed. Or maybe you just gotta play some Candy Crush before calling it a night. We get it. Here’s a compact charger to keep that power turned on.

9. Water Bottle

Hydration is key! A good water bottle that keeps your water ready for a short day hike with no spills and no frills is really all you need. If you don’t want to overspend then try this not too fancy and highly functional water bottle. In the end, it’s really just about hydration with ease!

10. Bug Repellent

Let's face it: bugs are part of the camping experience, but that doesn’t mean you have to let them ruin your trip. Keep the critters at bay with this bug repellent and make those mosquitos find another camp to bug (get it?).

Alrighty--with these 10 items, you’ll be well on your way to being ready for your first camping adventure. Oh, and we almost forgot the most important thing! Don’t forget to grab your First-Time Camper Tee...yes those bathroom details are important! It’s the perfect way to show off your newfound love for camping (we hope)—while keeping you comfortable!

Until next time...Live Quirky. 🍄
